The academic year kicked off in summery style last week with lemonade, Frisbees, and a chance to relax under blue skies with hundreds of others in the AU community. Students, staff and faculty members thronged the quad for the annual Celebrate AU event, enjoying the sunshine and piling their plates high with food, from sopapillas to sauerkraut to beef or vegetarian hot dogs. The event typically draws around a thousand people, said Katherine Kirlin, codirector of special events, who was passing out free Frisbees and cell phone and iPod holders emblazoned with the AU logo.
