Hundreds of cyclists rode into American University’s campus October 8 to complete the Tour des Trees, a seven-day, 485-mile bike ride to benefit the Tree Research Education and Endowment (TREE) Fund.

Under a canopy of soaring trees and pristine fall skies, the riders were treated to a concert by blues musician Tom Principato and special guest, keyboardist Chuck Leavell in the Woods-Brown Amphitheatre. AU president Neil Kerwin addressed the crowd.

The event began October 1 with a 30-mile ride in Virginia Beach, and concluded with a 35-mile ride from Reston, through the National Arboretum and National Mall, to AU’s main quad. The tour is a public awareness event that spreads the word for the need for research to keep urban trees and forests healthy, and it’s TREE’s biggest fund raiser.

As of October 11, the organization had raised more than $425,000 this year.
