Aguilar, Schellens Named All-Patriot League in Field Hockey
Announcement comes on eve of Patriot League Championship

WORCESTER, MASS. -- American University junior Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine’s Moorlands) and sophomore Karlijn Schellens (Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Conestoga [Pa.]) were both named to the All-Patriot League First Team for field hockey on Friday evening at the Patriot League Championship banquet on the campus of Holy Cross.

Aguilar, a stand-out forward, leads the Eagles in goals (11), assists (6) and points (28). She was a two-time selection for the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week this season, and finished second in the league in scoring with seven goals in seven league games, including a league-high three goals at Colgate on Oct. 6.

Shellens, a midfielder, finished the regular season with nine total points on three goals and three assists. She has twice come through in a clutch for the Eagles, netting the game-winning goal at Colgate on Oct. 6 and again at Cornell on Oct. 28.

American, the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Championship, is preparing to face No. 2 Lafayette on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the championship semifinals held at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. The winner of this year’s championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

American University, which is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League, officially joined the conference on July 1. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
