Schellens, Snyder each score in effort

Game Stats -- October 12, 2001

Washington, D.C. -- American lost, 3-2, to Georgetown today despite outshooting the Hoyas, 13-7, in a hard-fought game. Sophomores Karlijn Schellens (Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Contestoga, Pa.) and Melissa Snyder (Gathersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) each scored for the Eagles in the effort.

Georgetown got on the board first when Michaela Brown scored at 20:27 off a pass from Leanne Rizzo. With 9:59 left in the half, American forward Magdalena Aguilar was issued a yellow card for pushing, forcing the Eagles to play a man down for five minutes. Capitalizing on the penalty, Elena Ester scored the second goal for the Hoyas on a penalty corner.

Schellens put the Eagles on the board just two minutes into the second half on a penalty stroke, making the score 2-1. Georgetown later responded with the game winner when Aubrey Bruggeman scored with 14:05 left in the game.

Snyder tallied the final goal for the Eagles with 1:07 left to play. Aguilar assisted on the second goal.

American moves to 5-5 overall, 3-1 while playing in the Patriot League. They will play in their annual Alumni game this Saturday on American's Massachusetts Avenue field at 1:00 p.m. They then travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to face James Madison on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m.
