Falls to James Madison, 4-1 Freshman Mandel has first collegiate goal Game Stats -- October 17, 2001 Harrisonburg, Va. -- American field hockey lost, 4-1, today to former Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe James Madison. Freshman newcomer Hope Mandel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley H.S.) scored the lone goal for the Eagles, her first collegiate goal. The game stood scoreless at halftime after the Eagles outshot the Dukes 7-2 in the first period. JMU answered with a goal early in the second when Traci Forchetti scored off an assist from Carrie Phillips. The Dukes notched another point with 15:39 remaining in the game as Veerle Goudswaard knocked in a pass from Forchetti. American answered when Mandel scored off an assist from junior Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine's Moorlands) at the 20:45 minute mark, but the Dukes stormed back as Dana Weaver scored JMU's last two goals late in the period (Goudswaard had both assists). American sophomore goaltender Laura Miller had three total saves compared to five by JMU goalkeeper Kiernan Raffo. American moves to 5-6-0 overall, 3-1-0 while playing in the Patriot League. They will face their fifth Patriot League opponent this season when the team hosts Ursinus (an associate league member for field hockey) on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 9:00 a.m. on Georgetown University's turf field. The Eagles have a busy weekend ahead, as after the Ursinus game they will travel to Norfolk for a game at Old Dominion on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 1:00 p.m.
