Finds Tough Competitor in No. 2 Lafayette, Falls, 1-0, in Patriot League
Semifinals Lafayette will face Fairfield on Sunday for Patriot League championship Game Stats -- November 3, 2001 Worcester, Mass. -- American, the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Championship for field hockey, fell to No. 2 Lafayette, 1-0, in the semifinal game on Saturday. The Leopards will face No. 4 seed Fairfield on Sunday for the league championship and a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament. Lafayette scored at four minutes into the game when sophomore Jennifer Stone (Newton, Pa.) scored an unassisted goal at 3:55. The Eagles had many scoring opportunities throughout the game but could not find the back of the net. Junior stand-out Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine's Moorlands) led American in shots with four shots and two shots on goal. American keeper Laura Miller (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) kept her team in the running throughout the game, notching three saves. Miller finishes the season with a 5-4 goalie record. Earlier in the day, No. 1 seed Holy Cross fell to a tenacious Fairfield squad. The Stags went up 2-0 in the first half and held onto their lead for the remainder of the game. Fairfield outshot the Crusaders, 20-9, in a tough match. Tomorrow's Patriot League Championship is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on the campus of Holy Cross. The winner will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. In other post-season events, American's Aguilar and Karlijn Schellens (Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Conestoga [Pa.]) were named to the All-Patriot League first team on Friday evening at the Patriot League Championship banquet, the first such honor for both players in American's inaugural season of Patriot League competition.
