Eagles Enter League as Preseason Favorites

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The American University field hockey team joined
the school's volleyball team on Thursday by being selected as the preseason
favorite to win the league title in the school's first season as a full
member of the Patriot League.
The Eagles received seven first-place votes and 82 total points in a poll
taken of the coaches and sports information directors from the eight member
institutions..
Third-year head coach Steve Jennings leads American after a 10-7 overall record last year and a 1-4 mark in its last season of play in the Colonial Athletic Association. Despite the team's record, six of its seven losses came to teams that were ranked in the Top-20 nationally.
The team's top returning player this season is Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine's Moorlands). A two-time All-CAA First Team selection and the 1999 CAA Co-Rookie of the Year, the junior forward was a Regional All-American selection in each of her two years as an Eagle while leading the team in scoring both seasons. She has also climbed her way up to fifth on the all-time scoring list at American.
American opens its 2001 season on September 2 by hosting Davidson. The Eagles begin their Patriot League slate on Sept. 8 with a game at defending league champion Holy Cross.
American University
became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1 after competing in
the Colonial Athletic Association since the 1985-86 academic year. Founded
in 1893, American fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program,
featuring 10 women's sports and nine for men.
