Field Hockey Secures 2 of 3 PL Weekly Honors
WASHINGTON -- Senior Magdalena Aguilar and freshman Lindsay Carroll earned Patriot League Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, for the week of Oct. 14. For the second time in three weeks and fourth time in her career, Aguilar took home the offensive nod as the attacker scored two overtime game-winning goals for the Eagles. On Wednesday, she blasted a shot into the left corner of the cage at 99:18 in the second overtime to lift AU past non-league rival Towson, 1-0. On Saturday, Aguilar helped increase the winning streak to three with a second overtime score, this one on a corner in the 77th minute. It was also the 50th tally for the program’s second-leading scorer of all-time. Earning defensive honors in the wake of transitioning from forward to keeper seemed unlikely for Carroll, who turned back a total of 21 shots and recorded a 99:18 minute shutout of the Towson Tigers. Against Colgate on Saturday, she made eight saves in the overtime win and had a 96 percent save percentage in the two games. Currently, AU is 8-5 overall and 3-1 in Patriot League action as it heads to non-league Georgetown Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. start and plays Holy Cross in a pivotal Patriot League meeting Saturday at 1 p.m. American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year to date on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse. Chartered by an Act
of Congress in 1893, American University features students from all 50
states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
