Aguilar tallies 11th goal of season for Eagles

Senior Magdalena Aguilar scored her 11th goal of the season for the Eagles.

TOWSON, Md. -- With 42 seconds left in the second
sudden death overtime, senior All-America candidate Magdalena Aguilar snapped a quick shot past the outreached arm of Towson goalkeeper Sarah Perkins to solidify a 1-0 win over non-league rival Towson (8-4) for the American University field hockey team Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagle improve to 7-5 overall and remain 2-1 in the Patriot League as they prepare to host Colgate Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at College Park.

AU earned one its eight corners that set up the goal as junior Melissa Snyder slid a corner push-out to senior stick stopper Kate Finn. Aguilar delivered with a hard shot into the lower left corner of the net - the game-winner for the Eagles.

The goal was redemption for the 12th leading scorer in the nation as Aguilar had been denied on a penalty shot midway through the first half. It was Finn's fifth assist and Snyder's eighth point of the season.

Freshman Caroline Vo was a key piece to American defense as she halted many Tiger attacks with speed and finesse. Freshman keeper Lyndsay Carroll made eights saves on the day for her second win of the season and first shutout.

This marks the third game in 2002 AU has coaxed into overtime dating to the season-opener with Virginia Commonwealth in which the Eagles won in the second set of penalty strokes. On Sept. 28, American lost 1-0 in one overtime to Patriot League rival Lehigh.

The Eagles held advantage over Towson in the first overtime as they earned a pair of corners in a row that resulted in two shots but no score.

In regulation, the Eagles were outshot 12-5 but showed strength on both ends in the second half. Vo had several key interceptions including a run-on save with 45 seconds left that cut off a potentially dangerous pass.
