AU Field Hockey Falls to Georgetown, 2-1
Mandel scores first goal of season for American

October 15, 2002 | Stats

Hope Mandel found the back of the net for AU.

WASHINGTON -- The American University field hockey team almost sent itself to a third straight overtime game Tuesday afternoon as freshman Sara Carpenter's shot in a scramble ricochet off the crossbar with one second left to close out a 2-1 non-league loss to Georgetown University.

The loss broke tradition with a three-game winning streak the Eagles had, their longest of the season. AU, which earned votes in this week's STYX/NFHCA Division 1 National Coaches Poll, is now 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the Patriot League as it prepares to host Holy Cross Saturday at 1 p.m. at College Park.

Sophomore Hope Mandel scored her first goal of the season with less than six minutes left to play when she put back a shot from freshman Shannon Goans.

The Hoyas established a lead at 20:14 when Lauren Galbally made good on a corner shot deflection. Fourteen minutes later, Georgetown's leading scorer Jessica Quinn scored the game-winner and her 11th of the season on a pass from Leeanne Rizzo, who pulled right and slapped a pass down the middle of the field to Quinn. The freshman picked up the pass and took advantage of a one-on-one situation.

The Eagles earned a 12-4 advantage on corners and had nine shots to GU's 12.

In net for AU was ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week and Patriot League Player of the Week Lindsay Carroll, who made four saves.
