Holy Cross Slips Past AU Field Hockey, 3-2
Carpenter and Aguilar team up twice for Eagle goals

October 19, 2002 | Stats

Freshman Sara Carpenter tallied her third and fourth goals of the season against the Crusaders.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior All-America candidate Magdalena Aguilar found Sara Carpenter open twice Saturday afternoon, feeding the freshman with two goal opportunities for the American University field hockey team. However, sandwiched between the Boyertown, Pa. natives tallies were three Holy Cross goals as the Crusaders defeated the Eagles in a Patriot League matchup, 3-2.

AU, which has lost two straight, is now 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League while HC improves to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League action.

The Eagles earned a corner at the five minute mark as Aguilar took the stick-stop from senior Kate Finn and whipped a pass to Carpenter on the weak side. Carpenter stayed low and angled the ball into the net for the near open goal.

Just before the half, Holy Cross tied it up when Jillian LeClair (1 goal, 1 assist) scored on a deflection. Within six minutes of each other in the second half, the Crusaders would build their lead to 3-2 off goals by freshman Jenna Cook and senior Lisa Tutella (1 goal, 1 assist).

But AU fought back as Aguilar, who played in the defensive end, set Carpenter up for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season at 56:20. Despite a nine to four advantage on corners, American couldn't find a way to even the score before time ran out. For Aguilar, it was her 27th and 28th points in 2002 as the team's leading scorer and program's second all-time goal scorer.

The Eagles will host their final regular season Patriot League match on Nov. 2 against Bucknell at 1 p.m.
