American Field Hockey Takes Down Fairfield, 2-1
Carpenter, Aguilar score for Eagles in Patriot League matchup

October 5, 2002 | Stats

Freshman Sara Carpenter scored the game-winner for AU.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman Sara Carpenter found the back of the net for the second time in her collegiate career, tallying the game-winning goal to power American University's field hockey team past Patriot League rival Fairfield 2-1 Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the league as they recovered from an early 1-0 deficit.

Carpenter scored the deciding shot with 16:31 left in the second half off passes from freshman Maureen Daniel and senior Magdalena Aguilar.

Aguilar scored her 10th goal of the season just 1:01 after the Stags netted their lone score - a field goal - with 3:29 left in the first. Aguilar received on a corner, pulled past one defender and placed a reverse chip shot past the Fairfield keeper.

Freshman Caroline Vo started her 11th game of the season for AU and was critical in diminishing the Stags' shots on net. Classmate Shannon Goans was also impressive in the midfield.

The Eagles head to Towson on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. start.
