Aguilar, Snyder Honored as PL All-League Selections November 6, 2002
WASHINGTON -- American University field hockey senior Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine’s Moorlands) and junior Melissa Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) were named Patriot League First and Second-Team All-League selections, respectively, Wednesday afternoon. Joining Aguilar on the First-Team was senior Kate Finn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder), who was selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. Aguilar, a repeat First-Team All-Patriot League pick, is the team’s leading scorer with 15 goals and five assists for 35 points. In a 4-0 win over Bucknell that clinched a berth in the Patriot League Championships on Saturday, she came through with three goals and an assist. A three-time NFHCA Regional All-American, Aguilar is the second leading goal-scorer in the program’s history with 53 goals and 19 assists for 125 total points. That total also ranks her second in career points. Aguilar’s 19 assists ties her for sixth all-time in AU history. Her career has been well documented as she was the Colonial Athletic Conference Co-Rookie of the Year in 1999 and was a two-time All-CAA selection. Four times in her career she was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and was a two-time All-CAA Player of the Week choice. Snyder, a two-year starter at right wing, has tallied a pair of goals and five assists for American in 2002. She scored one goal against Appalachian St. and the game-winner in a key 2-0 victory over Massachusetts at the Maryland Tournament. “It is a fitting way for Male to conclude her collegiate career by being named to her fourth consecutive all-conference team. She has had some amazing games this year and I believe she is the most dangerous player in the conference,” said Head Coach Steve Jennings. “Melissa has developed so much over the past several years and it is great to see her recognized for her prowess on the offensive line.” On Friday, American (9-8, 4-2 PL), the No. 3 seed, will face No. 2 Holy Cross at 2 p.m. in the second Patriot League Championship semifinal at Rappolt Field in Easton, Pa. The first semifinal matchup is between No. 1 Lafayette and No. 4 Bucknell at noon. American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse. Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, American University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
