Eagles land 11 on PL Academic Honor Roll

February 6, 2003

Magdalena Aguilar earned regional All-America status all four years at AU.

WASHINGTON — American University senior Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine’s Moorlands) was named the Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors. Aguilar was joined by 10 of her teammates to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average (GPA) in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the seven league-sponsored fall championship sports.

The senior philosophy and sociology major maintains a 3.22 cumulative GPA and will graduate in May. While at American, Aguilar, who speaks two languages, has completed a video documentary on the economic and social crisis taking place in Argentina and was a participant in the NCAA Leadership Conference.

"This award exemplifies the type of person that Male is — a true student-athlete who has managed to have tremendous success on the field and in the classroom,” said AU field hockey coach Steve Jennings. “ She has been an inspiration to all of us and is the epitome of what we want our players to become, I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Also earning a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor from American was senior Kate Finn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder), and juniors Laura Miller (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) and Melissa Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard). Three sophomores were honored in Leah Danoff (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), Hope Mandel (Wayne Valley, N.J./Wayne Valley) and Lindsey Rice (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood). AU also had four freshmen on the honor roll with Emily Berlin (Greedfield, Mass./Greenfield), Sara Carpenter (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), Shannon Goans (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Heather Maranzano (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown).

In addition to her Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, Aguilar was on the 2002 STYX/NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team and was picked for the Division 1 North/South Senior All-Star Game. Aguilar also made the First-Team All-Patriot League and was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week twice this past season.

She is second on AU’s all-time list of career goals scored (53), second in all-time career points (125) and sixth in all-time career assists (19). Aguilar finished the 2002 season second in the Patriot League in scoring with 35 points, 25 points more than her second highest scoring teammate. Through the Eagles’ run into the Patriot League Championship semifinals, she had three multiple goal games.
