Miller Named Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year
15 field hockey players join senior on the honor roll

Senior Laura Miller was named the Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

WASHINGTON – Senior Laura Miller (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) was named the Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors.

A scholar-athlete nominee must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. A three-time Dean’s List member and a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Miller carried a 3.58 GPA in Political Science during the fall of 2003. She also is an active member of the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program, where she serves as the Public Relations Coordinator for the program’s steering committee.

In addition to her academic accomplishments, Miller finished her eligibility at American University as one of the top goalkeepers in school history, and the nation, ending the 2003 season ranked third in goals against average at .933 and first in save percentage at .856. She has also been honored as a 2003 STX/NFHCA Division I All-Region selection, the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and a selection on the South squad of the STX/NFHCA Division I North/South Senior All-Star game.

"Laura has had a tremendous four years and is fully deserving of this great award. She has engaged fully in the process of being a student athlete, striving for excellence in the classroom, in volunteer work and on the field,” American University Head Field Hockey Coach Steve Jennings said. “We are proud to have her as a valuable member of our field hockey program and prouder still that she is being recognized for her incredible achievements.

Miller is joined on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll by 15 of her teammates, more than any other school in the league. Emily Berlin (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield), Kristen Collins, Maureen Daniel (Clifton, Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), Leah Danoff (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), Shannon Goans (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill), Krysta Hankee (Germansville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), Heidi Hershberger (Davis, Calif./Davis), Alicia Krawitz (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), Hope Mandel (Wayne, N.J./ Wayne Valley H.S.), Heather Maranzano (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown), Erin Rock (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown), Erin Silliman (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Emily Smith (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), Melissa Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and Sacha-Rae Teixeria (Mississauga, Ont./Univ. of New Brunswick) all notched a 3.2 GPA or above to secure their spot on the list.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, completed its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
