AU Dominates St. Joe’s in Postponed Game
Villagra scores only goal of the final 29 minutes

Oct. 1, 2003

Javier Villagra scored the lone goal of the day.

WASHINGTON - After almost a month of waiting, the American University field hockey team was finally able to earn a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's University. The final 29 minutes of the game was played this evening at the University of Delaware.

The Eagles had led the Hawks 2-0 when lightning ended the game on August 30. The Eagles picked up right where they left off, as they dominated the final 29 minutes of play.

The first goal of the game was scored by senior Melissa Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), who slammed home a rebound. The second goal was scored by freshman midfielder Tiffany Carter (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School of Princeton), who scored less than a minute after entering the game.

The Eagles started the final 29 minutes of the second half with a sideline free hit. They dominated the game with 13 shots on goal, and five corners, led by Javiera Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) and Maureen Daniel (Clifton, Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa). St. Joe’s managed only four shots against goalkeeper Laura Miller (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) this evening, and a total of eight for the game.

The final goal for the Eagles came on a corner shot by Villagra, with an assist from Daniel.

The Eagles will try to extend their six-game winning streak on Saturday, October 4, 2003 as they take on Patriot League rival, Fairfield University. The game is scheduled to begin at 9:30 and will take place at the University of Maryland.
