Field Hockey Voted 19th in STX/NFCHA Division I Coach’s Poll
October 14, 2003 WASHINGTON - After two big wins against James Madison and Lehigh, the American University field hockey team has been ranked 19th by the 2003 STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll for the week of October 12th. This is the first time the team has been voted in the top 20 this poll this season. The Eagles have been having a stellar season, only losing one game early in the season 14th ranked Richmond in double overtime. The Eagles are 2-0 in the Patriot League and the only team in the league to have been ranked in the top 20. “I am very proud of what this team has accomplished thus far, but we are entering a critical phase of the season, and I want us to remain focused and desperate for more,” said coach Steve Jennings. “Hopefully we will be able to use this as a positive reinforcement to continue to get better on a game by game basis, and achieve our goal of winning the league and participating in the NCAA Tournament”. The Eagles were also honored this week by sweeping the Patriot League Player of the Week honors. Senior Melissa Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) was named Offensive Player of the Week for helping lead the team with four goals against Lehigh. Goalkeeper Laura Miller (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) was named Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) was named Rookie of the Week. The Eagles hope to remain undefeated in the Patriot League this weekend, as they go on the road to take on Holy Cross. American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, completed its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
