WASHINGTON – Playing against some of the world’s toughest competition, American University field hockey players Javiera Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) and Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) represented the Chilean National field hockey team at the Pan American Games in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Both standouts on the Eagles squad, Villagra has played on the national team for since 1998, while Infante has been a member since 2000, both participating in prestigious tournaments, such as the Junior World Cup and the Junior Pan American games.

In 2003, Villagra and Infante both contributed to AU’s success, posting a combined 25 goals and 12 assists. Both honored as All-Region First Team selections, and Villagra as an All-American Second Team selection, the two helped the team to a first-ever NCAA berth and Patriot League title.

At the Pan American Games, Villagra started things off for the Chileans, scoring two goals against the Netherlands Antilles and leading them to a 6-0 win. Against the eventual gold medalists, Argentina, Infante was able to get one of the only shots off for the Chileans, regardless of the 11-0 loss.

Helping the Chilean’s to a fifth place finish at the games, Infante was joined on the team by three of her siblings, Daniella, Paula, a current player for the University of Maryland and Denise, who has recently made a verbal commitment to American for the fall.

Villagra and Infante were also joined at the tournament by former American University field hockey star, Stacey Sui-Butt, who represented Trinidad and Tobago. Sui-Butt, an Eagle from 1994-96 still holds the AU record for all-time career goals, career points and seasonal goals and is the only player from the program to be recognized as a First Team All-American.
