American's
Maranzano Selected to Attend
August 9, 2004 WASHINGTON - American University Field Hockey player Heather Maranzano (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) has been selected to attend “A” Camp, better known as the Junior National Trials. Players are selected for the U.S. National team in early January from the “A” Camp pool. Maranzano was selected after participating in the “B” camp this summer while playing for the Tidewater Tempest, one of US Field Hockey’s summer-league teams. “I am tremendously excited for Heather that she is starting to gain the national attention she deserves,” AU Head Coach Steve Jennings said. “Heather has created this opportunity for herself by demonstrating a level of high work rate, technical skills and outstanding tactical understanding. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg for Heather and I look forward to seeing how far she can develop.” The Williamsburg, Va., native played in all 21 Eagle games last year, the team’s most successful season in program history. She tallied five assists and 16 shots on a team that won the Patriot League title and made it to the NCAA tournament. In her freshman season she competed in every game for American, while compiling two assists and five shots on goal. Maranzano is also a two-time member of the Patriot League’s Academic Honor Roll. AU’s Field Hockey
team begins its quest for a second consecutive appearance at the NCAA
Tournament in a tournament at the University of Connecticut on August
28. American’s opening round game will be against Albany at 11:30
a.m.
