NFHCA Honors Seven Eagles on Division 1 Academic Squad
Senior Finn heads up American scholastic standouts

Senior Kate Finn was named to the NFHCA Academic Squad.

WASHINGTON -- The American University field hockey team placed seven student-athletes on the 2002 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Squad as announced by the association today.

These student-athletes have been nominated by their coach and have achieved a minimum cummulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2002-03 academic year.

Senior Kate Finn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder), the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year was the lone senior for American, while juniors Laura Miller (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) and Erin Silliman (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) were also honored. Sophomore Hope Mandel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and freshmen Emily Berlin (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield), Shannon Goans (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Heather Maranzano (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) filled out the AU representatives.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year to date on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
