Field Hockey Loses to Spiders, 2-0 Sept. 1, 2002 | Stats
RICHMOND, Va. On the heels of a heart-stopping 2-1 win over Virginia Commonwealth University Saturday that was decided in penalty strokes, the American University field hockey team lost 2-0 to host Richmond Sunday to even out its young record at 1-1. The Eagles earned two more penalty corners than the Spiders by a 14-12 margin, but coincidentally, it was a pair of corners in which RU tallied its scores midway through the second half. Despite the a 0-0 score at the half, the Spiders rallied with 17 shots while American registered 10 of its own. AU goalkeeper Laura Miller, who turned back four penalty strokes in Saturday's win, made seven saves of her own. Offensively, the Eagles were led by senior All-America candidate Magdalena Aguilar, who ignited many attacks but was not able to have any result in a goal. "We had good opportunities and Male (Aguilar) created some great build-up plays," said AU Head Coach Steve Jennings. "Laura Miller had another great game." American is back in action on Saturday in a 12 p.m. start at Appalachian St. Shots: RU
- 17; AU - 10
