Senior back feeds AU offense

Sept. 16, 2002

Senior Kate Finn earned the PL Defensive Player of the Week.

WASHINGTON — American University senior Kate Finn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zodak Magruder) was named the field hockey Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 16 after helping the Eagles hold their opponents to one goal per game at the University of Maryland Tournament.

Finn, a four-year starter, is considered a key playmaker on the AU field and a leader defensively with 15 tackles on the weekend. She made a series of interceptions that led to AU’s second shutout in 2002, a 2-0 decision over UMass. Finn was also a strong presence in a 2-1 loss to Boston University, which received votes in the NFHCA Coaches Poll.

This week American heads to James Madison for a 6:30 p.m. start and opens its Patriot League schedule on Sunday with Lafayette at 11 a.m.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year to date on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
