Field Hockey report 9/8/03

What is it about Richmond? Why do they always have our number? I was almost sure this would be the year that we would break the ugly curse that prevents us from beating Richmond. But yet again they beat us 2-1 in double overtime. I know what you must be thinking, it must have been a hard played game if we took it into double overtime. If only you were right. The fact of the matter is that if we would have taken the advantage early we could have drastically changed the outcome of the game. We were lucky to hold Richmond to a 0-0 game in the first half. In the second half they scored first on a 2 v.1. We fought hard and eventually tied the game. Both teams came close to ending the game in regulation but defense denied the goals. We dominated the first overtime, coming OH so close to winning. Unable to put it away we went into the second overtime. After Richmond saved a sure goal shot on the line, they responded with a counterattack that resulted in a controversial penalty stroke call. Since we lost you must already know the result. I missed the stroke. The game ended and we all knew we could have played a different game.

Lucky for us the results of Sunday¹s game were much different. With a 3-1 win over Rider we learned what it felt like to win without playing pretty hockey. This will prove to be a good lesson for our young team. We dominated the first half and were up 1-0 at the half. The second half proved to be a totally different game. We were forced to work very hard defensively, defending 14 corners and a battery of shots. They scored on a well-played pass and shot, which in turn re-ignited our determination and we put the game away. Thanks to our wonderful parents we ended our second game weekend with a fabulous tailgate. I must say the freshman parents have caught on quickly and the spread of food is growing!

We will be back at Maryland this coming weekend to take on Pacific and Rutgers in the Maryland Terrapin Invitational Tournament. My guess is the bleachers at the new Maryland turf facilities will be done, which means more room for more fans. Hope to see you all there!

That’s all for now,

Laura
