American Opens Spring Season at Winthrop Waterford Invitational

Eagles place 14th in team scoring

Wes Cupp led American to a second-place finish at the UMBC Invitational.

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Playing its first tournament of the spring season, American University's golf team placed fourteenth at the Wintrhop Waterford Invitational, held at the Waterford golf club in Rock Hill, S.C. on Mar. 4-5.

Playing a par-72, 6,788-yard course, American golfer Wes Cupp finished in 34th at 11-over at 155. Mark Nihill and Chris Schieffer tied for 55th place, both scoring 17-over at 165.

Winthrop University claimed the tournament team title with a 585 total, with scores of 300 and 285. Patriot League foe Army also competed at the event, coming in 10th with a score of 622.

Mark Hunsicker of Elon was the tournament medalist, shooting an under-par 141 (71-70). He was followed in second place by Winthrop's Matt Johnson at 142 (75-67).

Cupp's performance marks the fourth time in three tournaments in 2001-02 that he has led the Eagles.

American is gearing up to travel to the Kauai Collegiate Cup, held in Kauai, Hawaii, on Mar. 20-23, hosted by Western Kentucky University.
