American Places Ninth at Navy Invitational

Ford Paces Eagle Attack with 154 total

Raul Ford led American at the Navy Invitational with a two-round total of 154.

Annapolis, MD -- Georgetown placed three golfers in the top 12, as it rolled to a seven-shot victory over Princeton here this weekend at the Navy Invitational, hosted at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club. American placed ninth in the 14-team field with a 620 team total. Princeton placed second overall at 600, and the host Midshipmen finished third at 6-3.

American was in solid position after the conclusion of the opening round on Saturday, standing seventh overall. Raul Ford, the Eagles' top finisher in the event, fired an opening-round 74 to lead AU.

Four American golfers dipped into the 70's on the first day, posting the school's best opening round of the season. Wes Cupp and Mark Nihill both fired 78's, and Mark Vedete came in with a 79. Seth Kaplan posted an 81 for the Eagles, who totaled 309 on the first day.

Ford dropped back in the field in the second round, coming in with a 80. Kaplan had his best round of the season, carding a 76. Cupp and Vedete were strong again, posting a pair of 78's, and Nihil came in with a 79.

Nat Hoopes of Princeton claimed medalist honors after winning a playoff with Georgetown's Nick Cook. Hoopes finished with a two-day total of 145, which including an opening-round 68. Cook was steady both day's, scoring 71 and 74.

American returns to action on Monday, Apr. 16, when it takes part in the Mount St. Mary's Invitational, hosted in Gettysburg, PA.
