WASHINGTON -- American University has named Josh Cupp assistant men’s golf coach. The announcement was made by Head Coach Jim Menditto. Cupp will assume the position immediately, and will be with the team when it takes part in the UMBC Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 20-30.

“We are extremely excited that Josh has joined our program,” Menditto said. “He has an outstanding background in the game, and will be able to relate extremely well to the players. His experience as a professional golfer will also be invaluable.”

Cupp might relate better to one player on the team than the rest, literally. His younger brother, Wes, is a senior on this year’s squad.

“I am looking forward to working with American’s golf program,” Josh Cupp said. “I am thankful to Coach Menditto for providing me with this opportunity. There is a solid team in place right now, and I hope we can continue the success they have enjoyed recently.”

Cupp is a 1996 graduate of Old Dominion University where he was a four-year star for the Monarchs. A four-time All-Virginia selection, Cupp was also a four-time team MVP. He received his bachelor of science degree in criminal justice.

A High School All-American in 1992, an honor he shared that year with Tiger Woods, Cupp was the New York State High School Champion as a senior, and was also the New York State Junior champion.

He has competed on the Hooters Tour and the North Atlantic Tour, where he was the Player of the Year and Tour Champion in 1996. Cupp has grossed over $250,000 in career earnings.

American completes the fall portion of its 2001-02 schedule when it takes part in the UMBC Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 29-30. The Eagles’ spring season begins Mar. 4-5 at the Winthrop Invitational.

American University became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, after competing in the CAA since the 1985-86 academic year. Founded in 1893, the University’s athletics program features 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
