AU Closes For Fall With Solid Showing at UMBC Invitational
Eagles Place Second Just Four Strokes Off Lead

Wes Cupp led American to a second-place finish at the UMBC Invitational.

MARRIOTTSVILLE, MD -- Playing its final tournament of the fall season, American University's golf team placed second overall at the UMBC Invitational, held at Waverly Woods Golf Club.

Playing a par-72, 6,724-yard layout, American placed three golfers in the Top 10, led by Wes Cupp's third-place finish at a four-over 151.

Eric Couture of St. Francis (Pa.) was the tournament medalist, shooting an even-par 144 (71-73). He was followed in second place by UMBC's Chris Davidson at 149 (75-76).

It was the third time in four tournaments this season that Cupp led the Eagles. He went for a three-over 75 in the first round on Monday, and came back with a four-over 76 in the second round.

Playing as an individual, not attached to the team's final score, AU's David Stone tied for fifth with a 153 (77-76) total. Seth Kaplan was tied for seventh at 154. He opened the tournament with a seven-over 79, but came back to fire a three-over 75 in the second round.

Rounding out the scoring for American was Chris Schieffer in 14th place, and Mark Nihill and Matt Michaels, who tied for 17th overall.

Schieffer went 78-82 (160), while Nihill and Maichael mirrored each other with a first round of 85, and a second of 77 for a 162 total.

American opens the 2002 spring season at the Winthrop Invitational, to be held Monday and Tuesday, March 4-5.
