March 11, 2003 ROCK HILL, S.C. - American University entered the second day of competition at the Winthrop/Waterford Golf Invitational in the fifth spot, but a rough 18 holes today pushed AU back to an 11th place finish. The Eagles shot 318 for the day, and 619 overall. AU finished 43 over, while Charleston Southern won the tourney with a final score of 581, good for five over. Phil Kief (Kingwood, Tx./Kingwood) posted a 78 today, and 153 for the two days. The 153 was good for 33rd overall in the competition, and he was tops on American’s squad. Freshman Ben Hartman (Jupiter, Fla./SunCoast) bounced back from his first round of 83 to post a 75. It was the best of any Eagle of the day, and he finished with a 158 (33rd). Mark Nihill (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius), who was tied for 17th after the first day, dropped to a tie for 69th, after he registered an 87 for the day. Seth Kaplan (Dallas, Tx./J.J. Pearce) also finished tied at 69, after his round of 78. The 78 was four shots better than his first day score of 82. Chris Schieffer (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) struggled on day two. After posting a opening-round 71, Schieffer fell to a 92 today. The score dropped him from a tie for fourth-place, to a tie for 80th with three other players. AU, which had not played a round of golf this spring due to poor weather conditions, finished 11th, 38 shots behind Charleston Southern. Mercer University was second overall, just four shots off of the lead, while Winthrop finished third with a team score of 590. Matt Johnson of Winthrop won individual honors with a two-day total of 141. Back just a shot was Charleston Southern’s Tom Schupp, who shot a 70 today and a 142 for the Invitational. Schupp’s teammate Matt Selby finished at 143. Par at the Waterford Golf Club is 72 and the yardage is 6,788.
