March 10, 2003

ROCK HILL, S.C. - American University’s Chris Schieffer (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) led the Eagles with a first round score of 71, leaving him tied for fourth and just one shot in back of the lead. American, which had not played a round of golf this spring due to weather conditions, is fifth out of 19 teams, with a team score of 301.

Charleston Southern leads the match after the first day with a team score of 285, followed by Mercer (289), Winthrop (291) and Gardner-Webb (293). The Eagles will have a chance to make a run in tomorrow’s second and final round.

“Overall, I am pleased with our play,” said American head golf coach Josh Cupp. “But if we had just played a little better, we could have really scored well. The course did not play that hard today.”

Mark Nihill (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) finished tied for 17th and is the next Eagle scorer after Schieffer. Nihill shot a 73, which was a very good score considering he shot a 40 for the first nine holes. Phil Kief (Kingwood, Tx./Kingwood) shot a 75, which puts him at +3 for the day. Seth Kaplan (Dallas, Tx./J.J. Pearce) posted an 82, while freshman Ben Hartman (Jupiter, Fla./SunCoast) notched an 83 for the day.

Paul Reed (Charleston Southern), Kyle Christman (Winthrop) and Chris Clark (Radford) all shot 70 for the day. Par at the Waterford Golf Club is 72 and the yardage is 6,788.

Play will continue on Tuesday with the final 18 holes beginning with an 9:00 a.m. tee time.
