June 26, 2003 WASHINGTON — American University’s men’s golf team placed three student-athletes on the Patriot League All-Academic Golf Team as announced by the league office. Freshman Rob McDonald (Reisterstown, Md./Park) led the Eagles with a 3.60 grade-point average in the spring semester. McDonald’s best round of the year came at the Bullock Collegiate Classic, where he shot a 77 and finished 16th overall. McDonald competed in three tournaments this year and averaged 82.3 per round. Phil Kief (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), a sophomore had a 3.46 GPA in the spring semester. He played in 12 tournaments and had six top-10 finishes (highest on the team). His best finish was at the Columbia Invitational, where he tied for fourth with a 149 for two rounds. His best round was at the Bullock Collegiate Classic when he shot par (72). He tied for 25th at the Patriot League Championship, and his overall average round score for the year was 76.3. Ben Hartman (Jupiter, Fla./Suncoast), a freshman had a 3.38 GPA in the spring semester. He shot his personal and team’s lowest round of the year in his first collegiate tournament. He shot 70 in the first round of the AU Classic and his two-day total of 141 gave him the individual title by one stroke. Overall, he finished the year with a 73.5 round average and he had three top-20 finishes. In his first Patriot League Championship, Hartman shot a 19-over par 235 and finished in a tie for 17th. His final-round 73 was the third best score of the day. For the year he averaged 77.8 per round. To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter. The Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s track & field. American placed sixth
overall at the Patriot League Golf Championship, finishing the three rounds
with a total of 941, just three behind Bucknell for fifth. The team had
two second-place tournament finishes in the fall and one third-place finish
in the spring.
