Kief and Shagin Lead Eagles at Winthrop-Waterford Invitational
March 9, 2004 ROCK HILL, S.C. - The American University golf team finished the Winthrop-Waterford Invitational tied for 17th place, shooting 639 as a team for the tournament. The second day of competition the Eagles shot a 309, 21 shots better than the previous day. Phil Keif (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) rebounded from a first-day round of 84 to shoot a 73 on the second day, which was just six shots off of the top score of the day. Kief finished tied for 47th with Todd Shagin (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) with a 157. Shagin was a bit more consistent as he followed his first-day round of 78 with a 79. For the tournament both Kief and Shagin were +13 strokes. Chris Schieffer (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) shot a 164 for the tourney with rounds of 83 and 81, which placed him in a tie for 74th with Rob McDonald (Reisterstown, Md./Park) and two other players. McDonald shot a 85 on the first day and came back strong with a 79 on the second day. UNC Greensboro won the 4th annual tourney with a total team-score of 594. Ulf Hedlund of Campbell was the top scorer with a two-day total of 138, eclipsing his next competitor by four strokes. The Waterford Golf Club course is 6,788 yards and a par 72.
