PRINCEVILLE, HI -- Playing its furthest tournament ever away from home, American University's men's golf team placed seventh at the Kauai Collegiate Cup. The Eagles went for a three-round total of 906. Four Western Kentucky golfers finished among the top 12 athletes at the Kauai Collegiate Cup at the Princeville Makai Course to lead the Hilltoppers to a 13-stroke victory in the tournament completed yesterday (Saturday, March 23) on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Marquette was second at 880 and Xavier was third with an 881 total. Brandon Waldrop paced the Toppers with his one-under par 215 score on the 6,886-yard course, rated one of the Top 100 courses in the United States. Five golfers completed play with an overall par score (216) or better. Miles Maillet of Xavier took medalist honors with a five-under 211, followed by Nic Watson of Eastern Michigan at 212. Nathan Colson of Marquette was third with his 213 and Matt Hilton of Marquette tied with Waldrop at 215 for fourth place laurels. Freshman Chris Schieffer led the Eagles, going 75-73 for a 148 total which tied him for 14th overall. Mark Nihill tied for 20th position with a 151 total (74-77), while David Stone went 76-77 (153), tying for 25th. Wes Cupp tied for 31st with a 155 (79-76), and Seth Kaplan went 87-76 for a 163 total. American returns to action on Monday and Tuesday, March 25-26, as it hosts the second annual American University Invitational at The Gauntlett at Curtis Park in Frederickburg, Va. First round action begins on Monday at 8:00 a.m.
