ANNAPOLIS, MD -- In what proved to be a preview of the upcoming Patriot League men's golf championship, American placed ninth out of 21 schools at the Navy Invitational held here on Saturday and Sunday. Minnesota, which totaled a 37-over 6-5, claimed the team title at the event, played at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club, a par-71, 6,611-yard layout. American finished ninth overall with a two-round total of 646. Seth Kaplan and Wes Cupp placed in a tie for 27th overall with 160 totals to lead the Eagles. Kaplan went 77-83, while Cupp went 81-79. Navy finished second overall, nine shots off Minnesota's winning score, while Princeton was third at 625. Fellow Patriot League school Lehigh finished fourth (636), followed by Iona at 639. Other Patriot League participants included Colgate (10th) and Bucknell (19th). David Stone opened with a solid 79, but came back with an 82 in the final round to finish at 161, good for a tie for 30th. Chris Schieffer tied for 56th after going 87-80 (167). Philip Kief was the fifth American finisher, placing in a tie for 83rd position at 173 (85-88). American returns to action next Monday, April 15, as it takes part in its final Patriot League Championship tuneup at the one-day Rehobeth Beach Invitational, held at Kings Creek Country Club. The Eagle then travel
to West Point, NY, the following Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21, for
the 2002 Patriot League Championship, hosted by Army.
