Michaels Named to PL Golf Academic Honor Roll June 27, 2002
WASHINGTON -- Matt Michaels (Hamilton, Ont./Westdale Secondary), a member of American University's men's golf team, has been named to the Patriot League All-Academic Golf Team. To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter. Michaels, a sophomore, had a 3.40 GPA in the spring semester. He played in a total of six tournaments in 2001-02, including three each in the fall and spring seasons. His best finish came at the Patriot League Championship where he tied for 39th overall. A total of 660 student-athletes were named to the Leagues Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll, including 25 with 4.00 GPAs. The Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of baseball, mens and womens basketball, golf, mens and womens lacrosse, softball, mens and womens swimming & diving, mens and womens tennis and mens and womens track & field American placed sixth overall at the Patriot League Golf Championship, finishing with a 908 three-round total. The team has two second-place tournament finishes in 2001-02, followed by one third-place finish. American University recently completed its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League. Its athletics program captured five regular-season Patriot League titles and four team tournament championships this year. Founded in 1893, American fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 sports for women and nine for men. The Patriot League,
an NCAA Division I athletics conference founded on the principle of admitting
athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its
second decade of academic and athletic excellence. Participation in intercollegiate
athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component
of the undergraduate experience. A successful Division I-AA football conference
since 1986 and an all-sport conference since 1990, membership includes
American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy,
while seven additional institutions hold associate membership. Patriot
League member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in
the nation, graduating alumni who are well prepared for life with the
ability to make meaningful contributions to their community and society
in general. In the most recent NCAA Graduation Rate Report of student-athletes,
the Patriot League ranked FIRST among NCAA Division I conferences.
