WASHINGTON -- American University has named Josh Cupp its men’s golf coach. The announcement of his appointment was made by Tom George, Director of Athletics. Cupp, who was an assistant coach with the Eagles for the past year, becomes the first full-time head coach in the history of the program.

“American University is pleased to name Josh Cupp its head golf coach,” said George. “He brings immediate credibilty to our golf program because of his experience as a touring pro, and relates extremely well to the student-athletes. We think elevating the position from part-time to full-time status with a coach of Josh’s background will also help to upgrade our program.”

Cupp is a 1996 graduate of Old Dominion University with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice. He was a four-year star for the Monarchs, earning All-Virginia honors four straight years in addition to four consecutive team MVP awards. A high school All-America pick in 1992, an honor he shared that year with Tiger Woods, Cupp was the New York State Junior champion in 1991.

“I am looking forward to impressing upon our current and future student-athletes the importance of a well-rounded approach to the game, which includes academic pursuits,” said Cupp. “We are going to establish a formidable schedule, playing the top tournaments on the East Coast, which in turn will quickly improve our quality of play.”

Moving to the professional ranks following graduation, Cupp competed on the Hooters Tour and the North Atlantic Tour, where he was the Player of the Year and Tour Champion in 1996. For his career, Cupp grossed over $250,000 in career earnings. In addition, he played in the 2000 B.C. Open, a regular stop on the PGA Tour.

Active in various facets of the game, Cupp has instructed at the top level of the sport, and has also been involved in golf course architecture.
