Wes Cupp led American to a sixth-place finish at the St. Bonaventure Invitational.

OLEAN, N.Y. -- Coming off a tough start to the 2001-02 season, American rebounded with a tie for sixth place at the St. Bonaventure-Leo Keenan Invitational. American was the defending champion of the event.

Wes Cupp paced American with a tie for third place. He covered the par-70, 6,340-yard course with a four-over 144. Freshman Chris Schieffer had an outstanding event, tying for eighth at 146.

17 schools competed in the event, which was held at Bartlett Country Club. Rain delays and numerous showers delayed play during the second round.

The Eagles, who tied with St. Joseph's, were in solid position after the first round, shooting a team total of 301, good for sole possession of seventh place. American stood just four strokes out of third, and six out of second.

American bettered its second-round score by four strokes, and finished with a 598 total. Host St. Bonaventure, which shot an impressive 288 in the first round, captured the team title with a 582 total.

The Eagles finished better than two other Patriot League opponents, Lafayette and Bucknell. Lafayette tied for 10th, while Bucknell stood alone in 13th place.

Cupp, a senior, went 71-73 for the Eagles. He was just three shots back of medalist Jay Lindell of St. Bonaventure, who finished with a 141 total for the two rounds.

Scheiffer, playing just his second collegiate event, shot a 76 in the first round, but came back with an even-par 70 on day two.

David Stone posted a 152 (76-76), Mark Nihill had a 156 (78-78), and David Stone had a 171 (85-86) to round out American's scoring.

American returns to action on October 1, when it takes part in the one-day George Washington Invitational.
