American Opens 2001-02 at Navy Fall Golf Classic

Mark Nihill paced American at the Navy Invitational over the weekend. It was the season-opening tournament for the Eagles.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American University's golf team opened its 2001-02 campaign by taking part in the Navy Fall Golf Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8-9. The Eagles finished with a 635 team total, placing them 27th.

Vanderbilt claimed the team title with a 574 total, and was followed by Penn (585), while Army, George Mason and Lehigh all tied for third at 589.

Mark Nihill led the American contingent with a two-round total of 153. After firing a team-best 73 in round one, Nihill came back with an 80 in Sunday's round. He tied for 68th overall.

Wes Cupp went 75-83 for the Eagels for a 158 total, while Seth Kaplan carded a 79-83 for a 162.

Freshman Chris Schieffer led American in Sunday's round with a career-best 79. He finished with a 164 total for the tournament.

American returns to action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15, when it takes part in the Bucknell Invitational.
