Patrick Doctor scored 23 points to lead the Eagles to a 91-67 win over Gulbene Buki in the preseason finale.

WASHINGTON -- Patrick Doctor (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park) scored a game-high 23 points to lead four Eagles in double-figures as American closed its preseason schedule with a decisive 91-67 win over Gulbene Buki (Latvia) here on Sunday afternoon.

Playing its final tuneup before facing No. 2 Maryland in the 2001-02 season opener next Saturday, American came out quickly, and rode the back of junior point guard Glenn Stokes (Silver Spring, Md./Tallahassee CC). Stokes ignited the Eagle offense in the first half, scoring 14 points and dishing out five assists in the period. His pressure defense rattled the Gulbene guards, forcing 12 turnovers that were converted into 16 points by American.

American led 13-4 after just three-and-a-half minutes of play. Two free throws by Doctor stretched the margin to 10 (23-13) at the 13:23 mark of the first half, and the Eagles extended their lead to 12 (32-20) with 8:43 left in the period on a three-pointer by Stokes.

A three-pointer by Stokes, a layup by Vladimir Buscaglia (Geneva, Switzerland), and a three-pointer by Nick Boyd (West orange, N.J./Essex CC) helped American to a 50-33 advantage heading into the lockerroom.

The second half was more of the same for the Eagles. An old-fashioned three-point play by Doctor at the 16:14 mark stretched the lead to 20 (57-37) for the first time, and American led by as many as 26 points in the period.

Stokes finished with 16 points and seven assists, while Steven Miles (Alexandria, Va./Coastal Carolina) added 13 points and five assists. Keith Gray (Longview, Texas/Pine Tree) led American in rebounding with seven, while chipping in with 11 points.

Gulbene was led by Uldis Rudzitis with 15 points. Arturs Brunins added 13, while Ivars Timmermanis had 12. Gulbene closes its seven-game American tour when it faces Richmond tomorrow evening.

American shot 55.6 percent (35-of-63) from the floor, and hit 42.1 percent (eight-of-19) of its three-point attempts. The Eagles struggled at the free-throw line though, hitting for just 59.1 percent (13-of-22).

The Eagles open the 2001-02 regular-season next Saturday, Nov. 17, when it travels to College Park, Md., to face the No. 2-ranked Maryland Terrapins. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Cole Field House.
