WASHINGTON -- Steven Miles (Alexandria, Va./Coastal Carolina) scored 18 points and Glenn Stokes (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein) added 13 points and 10 assists as American opened its 2001-02 season with an 81-68 win over Metro South Basketball here on Tuesday evening.

American, entering its inaugural season as a member of the Patriot League, opens the regular season with a date at the University of Maryland on Nov. 17.

Metro South, coming off a 104-87 win over VMI on Sunday, was featuring Cameron Taylor (George Mason), who scored 31 points and added 25 rebounds last night. The Eagles held him in check though, as he finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds this evening.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well in the first half, as they combined to put up 64 shots in the period. American went 12-of-34 (35.3 percent) from the field in the first half, while Metro South went 12-of-30 (40 percent). The first half featured 11 ties and seven lead changes, with neither squad building a margin greater than four points.

With the game knotted at 35-35 at the half, American came out quickly in the second half. Two layups by Stokes and a three-pointer by Miles keyed a 9-0 run to push American ahead 52-44 at the 13:31 mark of the period.

After building the lead to 11 at the 8:45 mark, the Eagle advantage hovered around 10 points the rest of the way. The Eagles went five-of-five from the line down the stretch to seal the win.

Brian Williams (Richmond, Va./Hagerstown CC) had 16 points and eight rebounds, while going six-of-six from the free-throw line. Keith Gray (Longview, Texas/Pine Tree) came off the bench to post 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Patrick Doctor (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park), the Eagles’ leading scorer last season, played 19 minutes and score 10 points. He is coming off an early-season injury which has limited him time in practice over the last few weeks.

Ahmad Dorsett paced Metro South with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Brion Dunlap had 13 points as well.

American plays its final preseason tuneup on Sunday, Nov. 11, when it hosts Gulbene Buki (Latvia) in Bender Arena at 2:00 p.m.
