WASHINGTON -- American trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half, but held Lehigh scoreless over the final 2:49 to hold on for a 70-67 win in a Patriot League game here on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,483. The win guarantees American a winning season for the first time since 1990-91, when the Eagles were 15-14.

Lehigh (4-21, 1-11 PL) matched first-place American (15-10, 9-3 PL) basket for basket in the early portion of the first half, and then rode the hot shooting of Matt Logie to grab a nine-point lead with 9:09 to play in the first half.

Logie, who scored his 1,000th career point this afternoon, knocked down three three-pointers in the opening stanza en route to 13 points, while the Mountain Hawks built a 35-28 advantage heading into the lockerroom.

Patrick Doctor, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, was just as effective in the first half, exploding for 15 points and five rebounds. He finished with a game-high 30 points and seven rebounds. In the last two games, Doctor has gone for 61 points on 20-of-30 shooting from the field.

Lehigh scored 11 of the first 13 points of the second half, all by Logie, to open a 46-33 advantage, and Eric Heil’s layup pushed the margin to 15 with 16:39 to play. American responded with an 11-0 run of its own to get the Mountain Hawk lead down to four (48-44) with 13:49 left.

Down eight with 7:56 to play, the Eagles started their final run on a three by Vladimir Buscaglia. Doctor followed with a layup, and then Glenn Stokes knocked down back-to-back three’s to help American to within one point at 62-61 with 4:54 to play.

Trailing by three, Doctor converted a layup to get American within one with 2:22 to play. After the teams traded turnovers, Miles hit a baseline jumped with 49 seconds left to give American its first lead since the 16-minute mark of the first half.

Following a rebound of a Logie three-point miss on the next possession, American’s Andres Rodriguez missed two free-throw attempts with 21 seconds to play, allowing Lehigh one final chance. Logie got in the lane, but the ball was jarred loose and Miles came up with it. He knocked down two free throws with five seconds to play to push the lead to three, and Alex Jensen’s last-second attempt fell short.

Stokes joined Doctor in double figures with 10 points, while miles added nine points and seven rebounds. Bobby Mbom came off the bench to tally 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds for Lehigh, while Eric Heil added 10 and seven, respectively.

American returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20, when it travels to local rival Navy for a 7:30 p.m. game in Alumni Hall. The Eagles return home to host Holy Cross in the regular-season finale next Saturday, Feb. 23, in a 1:00 contest.
