WASHINGTON
-- Glenn Stokes scored 19 points
to pace four players in double figures to help lead American to a decisive
72-58 win over Colgate in a Patriot League game on Saturday afternoon
in Bender Arena. The win was the second straight for the Eagles, who swept
the season series from the Raiders. The Eagles rallied with an 11-2 run, capped by back-to-back layups by Steven Miles and Patrick Doctor, to regain the lead (21-18). After a layup by the Raiders Howard Blue, American closed the opening stanza with a 12-4 spurt to head into the break up, 33-24. All 12 points during the final push came on three pointers, two by Miles and one each from Stokes and Vladimir Buscaglia. The second half did not see a big run from the Eagles, who eventually opened a 14-point lead with 9:38 to play, but rather solid play and even better shooting. American went 13 of 21 from the field in the second half (61.9 percent) and an even better 10 of 12 from the line (83.3). The Eagles finished the game at 54.5 percent from the floor and 76.2 percent from the line, rebounding from a dreadful 17 of 34 performance in a win over Navy here on Wednesday. With the advantage sliced to nine (53-44) with 7:09 to play, Doctor hit a baseline jumper to send it back to 11. Stokes then scored five a quick points on a long two-pointer and a three-pointer from the wing to send it to 14 (60-46). Miles joined Stokes in double figures with 18 points, while adding a game-high nine rebounds. Doctor finished with 10 points, including eight in the second half, and three blocks, while Buscaglia came off the bench to add 10 points and three assists. Keith Williams finished with 10 points for the Raiders, while Pat Campolieta had nine points and eight rebounds. American begins it most important stretch of the season as it embarks on a three-game roadtrip. The Eagles first visit Army in West Point, N.Y. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, and then travel to Lafayette in Easton, Pa., next Saturday, Feb. 9. American then concludes the trip by facing Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
