Junior guard averages 20.5 points in 2-0 week for the Eagles

February 4, 2002

Glenn Stokes led American to a 2-0 week, including wins over Navy and Colgate last week. He was named the Patriot League's Player of the Week on Feb. 4.
WASHINGTON -- Playing his best basketball of the season in the most important stretch, American University’s Glenn Stokes (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein) was named the Patriot League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week this afternoon, as announced by the league office.

Stokes, a junior guard, averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 3.5 steals in a 2-0 week for the Eagles. American has now won eight of its last 10 games, including important victories over Navy and Colgate this past week.

The 5-7 guard has saved his best play of the season for this key segment, as the Eagles are perched atop the Patriot League standings with a one-game lead. Now at 6-2 in league play, American holds a game advantage over Holy Cross and Lafayette, which both sit at 5-3.

Stokes scored a career-high 22 points on 6 of 9 shooting from three-point range in a 67-66 overtime win against Navy last Wednesday. He added six steals, four rebounds, and three assists. On Saturday, he came back with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

It is the second time this season American was honored with a Patriot League Player of the Week, as Steven Miles claimed the award on Jan. 7.

American is now 12-9 overall, including its 6-2 mark in Patriot League play. The Eagles have a winning record this late in the season for the first time since 1989-90, when they were 14-7 after 21 games. American also has the most wins in a campaign since 1995-96, when it went 12-15.

The Eagles embark on a three-game roadtrip, beginning with Wednesday’s tilt with Army in West Point, N.Y. American then travels to Easton, Pa., on Saturday for a key matchup with Lafayette. The swing concludes with a trip to Lewisburg, Pa., on Jan. 13, as the Eagles face Bucknell.

American University became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001, after competing in the CAA since the 1985-86 academic year. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
