Stokes
Named Patriot League Player of the Week February 4, 2002
Stokes, a junior guard, averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 3.5 steals in a 2-0 week for the Eagles. American has now won eight of its last 10 games, including important victories over Navy and Colgate this past week. The 5-7 guard has saved his best play of the season for this key segment, as the Eagles are perched atop the Patriot League standings with a one-game lead. Now at 6-2 in league play, American holds a game advantage over Holy Cross and Lafayette, which both sit at 5-3. Stokes scored a career-high 22 points on 6 of 9 shooting from three-point range in a 67-66 overtime win against Navy last Wednesday. He added six steals, four rebounds, and three assists. On Saturday, he came back with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. It is the second time this season American was honored with a Patriot League Player of the Week, as Steven Miles claimed the award on Jan. 7. American is now 12-9
overall, including its 6-2 mark in Patriot League play. The Eagles have
a winning record this late in the season for the first time since 1989-90,
when they were 14-7 after 21 games. American also has the most wins in
a campaign since 1995-96, when it went 12-15.
