EASTON, PA -- American rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half, but Brian Burke knocked down a 25-foot three-point attempt with 1.9 seconds to play, giving Lafayette a 77-74 win over American here on Saturday afternoon in front of 3,192 in Kirby Sports Center. Lafayette claimed the season series, 2-0, after beating the Eagles, 57-52, in Washington, DC, on Jan. 16. American (13-10, 7-3) jumped out to a five-point lead five minutes into the contest, and increased its margin to nine points (21-12) with 10:30 to play in the first half. Lafayette used a 21-6 run over the next six minutes though, and held a 33-27 lead with 4:30 left in the opening stanza. The Leopards increased their lead to 10 heading into the half. After a three-pointer at the start of the second half by Lafayette's Justin DeBerry, who finished with a team-high 19 points, American ripped off 13 of the next 15 points to get within two at 50-48. Five different players scored during the run, which was capped by a Patrick Doctor layup. Doctor, who was a huge presence inside today, led all scorers with 23 points and went a perfect 10-of-10 from the field. American dominated the inside play this afternoon, outscoring Lafayette, 38-16. Over the next five minutes, Lafayette regained an eight-point lead as Ben Saxton led a small run with two three-pointers. Saxton finished the game five-of-eight from three-point range, en route to 17 points. Down six with 4:28 to play, American used two free throws and a bucket from Doctor, a three-pointer from Vladimir Buscaglia and a free throw by Andres Rodriguez to knot the score at 72-72. Two free-throws by DeBerry gave the Leopards a 74-72 lead with 1:28 left. Buscaglia, who was fouled on the next possession on a three-point attempt, knocked down two, tying the game. After a steal, by Rodriguez on Lafayette's next possession, an American turnover gave the ball back to Lafayette, setting up Burke's heroics. After a timeout, Rodriguez threw a baseball pass to Steven Miles who got off a good look at the buzzer, but his three-point attempt hit the back iron and rimmed out. Miles and Buscaglia each finished with 11 points, while Keith Gray added 10 and six rebounds. Rodriguez also dished out a career-high nine assists. Burke had 16 for Lafayette, while Mick Kuberka and Mike Farrell added 11 and 10, respectively.
