American Upended in Overtime, 80-79
Glenn Stokes scores career-high 25 points

Glenn Stokes carried AU to overtime, but the Eagles could not come away with the road win over UNC-Greensboro.

Greensboro, N.C. — Senior captain Glenn Stokes (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) scored a career-high 25 points, but it was not enough as the Eagles lost in overtime to UNC-Greensboro. Stokes sent the game into OT with his fourth trey of the night with just two seconds left. His fifth three-pointer gave the Eagles the lead with ten seconds left.

The Eagles had trailed by as many as nine late in the second half but kept coming back. Junior Jernavis Draughn (Triangle, Va./Potomac Senior) had another brilliant second half for AU. He had the first double-double of his career with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He also blocked a shot and dished out an assist.

Stokes was nine-of-20 from the field and five-of-nine from behind the three-point arc. In addition to his offensive contribution he pulled down five rebounds, dished out five assists, forced numerous turnovers with his defensive pressure and played a career-high 41 minutes.

In the overtime period Stokes tied things up at 77 apiece and then found Patrick Okpwae (Yaounde, Cameroon/Berkshire Academy) for a dunk and a two-point lead with 20 seconds remaining. James Maye then hit the final bucket of the game with 14 seconds left in OT.

Okpwae played for the first time this season and gave AU a lift off the bench. He was three-of-five from the field, a perfect two-for-two from the free throw line and also registered an assist and a block all in just 19 minutes.

The Eagles outrebounded the Spartans by a three (40-37) forced 13 turnovers and picked up five steals. However, they could not overcome the 50.0 percent field goal shooting by UNC and the seven blocked shots.
