AU Men’s Basketball Picked Second in Patriot League
Glenn Stokes named to Preseason All-League squad

August 30, 2002

Senior Glenn Stokes was named to the Patriot League Preseason All-League squad.

WASHINGTON — After winning the Patriot League regular season title last season, American University’s men’s basketball squad was picked to finish second in the league in 2003. Senior Guard Glenn Stokes (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein/Tallahassee CC) was named to the Patriot League Preseason All-League team after earning second-team honors last year.

AU finished second in the preseason poll to defending champion Holy Cross. The Eagles received two first-place votes in the poll of the league’s coaches and sports information directors.

Stokes had an outstanding season last year as he helped to lead American to the regular season title. He finished the season averaging 9.4 points per game while finishing second in the league in free throw percentage (88.0 percent) and steals (1.80 per game). Stokes also was fifth in the Patriot League in three-point percentage (38.7 percent) and ninth in assists (2.93 assists per game).

Also returning for AU this year is Stokes’ backcourt partner, Steven Miles (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield/Coastal Carolina). Miles is the squad’s top returning scorer after averaging 11.8 points per game last year. He also averaged 5.5 rebounds per game in his first year with the squad.

After making an immediate impact in the second half of the season last year, guard Andres Rodriguez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Ignacio/Louisville) returns for his first full year with AU. He had to sit out the first semester due to NCAA bylaws last year, but Rodriguez quickly became an important part of the Eagles, starting 20 of the 22 games he played.

AU’s season begins on the road November 22 as the Eagles play Missouri.

American University is beginning its second year of membership in the Patriot League. In its inaugural year it captured league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse. The University fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.

American became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001. Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, the University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
