Patriot League Player of the Year continues to rack up hardware

March 12, 2002

Patrick Doctor was named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press on March 12. In addition to this prestigious honor, Doctor has also been named to the USBWA District II team as well as the Patriot League Player of the Year.

WASHINGTON -- Continuing to add to his trophy case, American University’s Patrick Doctor was named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press this afternoon. This is in addition to Doctor’s selection to the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District II team, and being tabbed the Patriot League Player of the Year.

Doctor, a 6-7 senior center, helped lead the Eagles to the cusp of its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, as the squad competed in the Patriot League Championship game last Friday, falling to Holy Cross, 58-54, in front of a sellout crowd in Bender Arena.

Averaging 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds for American this season, Doctor stepped his game up to another level in the postseason, averaging 20.7 points and 10.3 rebounds in three games. He scored a career-high 33 points against Lafayette in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament, while matching his career-best rebounding effort with 14. In the quarterfinal win over Lehigh, he went for 11 points and 14 boards.

His best stretch of the regular season came in early February, when he averaged 24.2 points over a five-game span, shooting an incredible 76 percent from the field and 87 percent from the line. In that run, he posted a then-career high 31 points at Bucknell and followed that with 30 points against Lehigh, becoming just the sixth player in American history to post back-to-back 30-point game.

A two-time Patriot League Player of the Week selection this season, Doctor was also awarded All-League First Team honors.

The Eagles concluded the 2001-02 campaign with an 18-12 mark overall, and finished the regular season with a 10-4 mark in the Patriot League, earning the league’s regular-season title. American posted a winning season for the first time since 1990-91, and had its most wins since the 1989-90 campiagn.

American University became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
