WASHINGTON -- Recognized for his outstanding play this season, American University’s Patrick Doctor was named the Patriot League Player of the Year today. Joining Doctor on the postseason honors list was Glenn Stokes, Md./Einstein), who was named to the All-League Second Team.

Top-seeded American begins its quest for the Patriot League Championship tomorrow afternoon when it faces No. 8 Lehigh at 12:00 p.m. in Show Place Arena, in Upper Marlboro, Md.

A senior center, Doctor averaged 14.3 points and 5.5 rebounds for the Eagles, who overcame preseason predictions to capture the league’s regular-season title. Doctor, a preseason all-league selection, shot a stellar 57.9 percent from the field and 73.4 percent from the ree-throw line.

His best stretch came in early February, when he averaged 24.2 points over a five-game stretch, while shooting an incredible 76 percent from the field and 87 percent from the line. In that run, he posted a career high 31 points at Bucknell and followed that with 30 points against Lehigh, becoming just the sixth player in American history to post back-to-back 30-point game.

A two-time Patriot League Player of the Week selection this season, Doctor was also awarded All-League First Team honors. Joining him on the squad were Bucknell’s Bryan Bailey and Boakai Lalugba, Holy Cross’ Tim Szatko, Colgate’s Pat Campolieta, and Lafayette’s Brian Burke.

A junior guard, Stokes averaged 9.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He ranks second in the league in steals and eighth overall in assists. He scored a career-high of 22 points against Navy on Jan. 30 and seven steals against Wagner on Dec. 29.

The Eagles finished the regular season with a 16-11 record overall and a 10-4 mark in the Patriot League. American assured itself of a winning season for the first time since 1990-91, when they went 15-14, and has the most wins since 1989-90.

American University became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
