WASHINGTON -- The hardware keeps flowing in for American Universitys Patrick Doctor as he was named to the United State Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District II team. The region is comprised of schools from New York, New Jersey, Delaware and the District of Columbia. This is his first appearance on the All-District team. Doctor, a 6-7 senior center, was named the Patriot League Player of the Year prior to the start of the Patriot League Tournament. He leads the top-seeded Eagles into Fridays league championship game, which will be held at Bender Arena, against No. 2 Holy Cross. Joining Doctor on
the District II squad were Dwayne Archbold (Siena), Andre Barrett (Seton
Hall), J.R. Bremer (St. Bonaventure), Jerome Coleman (Rutgers), Luis Flores
(Manhattan), Marcus Hatten (St. John's), Mario Porter (Rider), Preston
Shumpert (Syracuse), and Mike Sweetney (Georgetown). Averaging 14.9 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Eagles, Doctor has stepped his game up to another level in the postseason, averaging 22.0 points and 14.0 rebounds in two games. He scored a career-high 33 points against Lafayette in the semifinals, while matching his career-best rebounding effort with 14. In the quarterfinal win over Lehigh, he went for 11 points and 14 boards. His best stretch of the regular season came in early February, when he averaged 24.2 points over a five-game span, shooting an incredible 76 percent from the field and 87 percent from the line. In that run, he posted a then-career high 31 points at Bucknell and followed that with 30 points against Lehigh, becoming just the sixth player in American history to post back-to-back 30-point game. A two-time Patriot League Player of the Week selection this season, Doctor was also awarded All-League First Team honors. Joining him on the squad were Bucknells Bryan Bailey and Boakai Lalugba, Holy Cross Tim Szatko, Colgates Pat Campolieta, and Lafayettes Brian Burke. The Eagles now stand at 18-11 overall, and finished the regular season with a 10-4 mark in the Patriot League, earning the leagues regular-season title. American has assured itself of a winning season for the first time since 1990-91, and has the most wins since 1989-90. Tipoff for Fridays Patriot League Championship game is at 4:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN. The Eagles are looking for their first-ever berth in the NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Tournament. American University
became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001. The University,
founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring
10 womens sports and nine for men.
