Joins AU Men's Basketball Staff June 15, 2001
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American University has named Kelvin Jefferson a men's basketball assistant coach, effective immediately. Announcement of his appointment was made by head coach Jeff Jones. Jefferson replaces Kevin Broadus, who accepted a similar poistion at George Washington University. "We are excited to have Kelvin join our staff," Jones commented. "He brings a tireless work ethic, and has a great background in recruiting the Northeast. He will be a valuable member of our staff." Jefferson, who enters his seventh season as a collegiate coach, joins the AU staff from the University of Vermont, where he served as an assistant for the past two seasons under Head Coach Tom Brennan. A native of Norwalk, CT, Jefferson is a 1995 graduate of Southern Connecticut State University where he was a standout on the men's basketball team, and served as a team captain his junior and senior seasons. Following graduation,
Jefferson began his coaching career as an assistant at Wesleyan (CT.)
University for one season. He then spent a year at Salem State (MA) and
went on to serve as the top assistant at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
for two years. For three straight seasons- one at Salem St. and two at the U.S.M.M.A., Jefferson helped lead his teams to the Division III NCAA tournament. A tireless recruiter who is well connected in the east, Jefferson is also a regular a several basketball camps and clinics throughout the Northeast. American University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 womens sports and nine for men. American will become a full member of the Patriot League with the start of the coming 2001-02 academic calendar.
