CHARLOTTESVILLE,
Va. - The
American University men's tennis team closed out the 2004 season with
a 4-0 NCAA first-round loss to No. 10 University of VIrginia.
The Eagles, who have taken home the Patriot League championship title
for three years straight, conclude the season with a 13-9 overall record
and a 5-1 Patriot League record. This NCAA match also marks the programs
third tournament appearance.
Seniors Tushar
Garg (Mumbai, India / Bradenton Academy) and Andreas
Kulcsar (Nuremberg, Germany/Neues Gum. Nuremberg) faced the No. 21
double team of Nick Meythaler and Ryan Rizza in the top position, falling
in the closest match of the day, 8-5.
Garg also faced tough competition in the top singles position, playing
Doug Stewart, the No. 9 ranked singles player. Garg fell 6-2, 6-2. Fellow
seniors Jonah Fliegelman
(Philadelphia, Pa./Central) and Ruben
Rivero (Sevilla, Spain / Suffolk County Community College) also fell
in singles, securing the Cavalier's 4-0 victory. Fliegelman fell 6-3,
6-1 in the second position, while Rivero fell 6-1, 6-3 in the fifth position.
The Eagles, who will graduate six seniors this season, placed four athletes
on the All-League teams, including Garg, Fliegelman and Guillaume
Tarralle (Paris, France / French International School) on the First
Team All-Patriot League and sophomore Juancarlo
Vazquez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Centre Educativo de Superior Vocational/Saint
John’s) on the second team. Head Coach Martin
Blackman was also named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the
third consecutive year.
